2002 First Open Source release

13 December 2003

The first pre-release of Passwordsafe 2.0 is now available for download. Some features are missing, and there are some annoying GUI issues, but the program is stable, and it seems good enough to start getting feedback from users asides myself...

THIS IS NOT YET READY FOR GENERAL USE. Please download and use this program only if your are interested in seeing the new features, and would like to help the development process by reporting bugs, desired features, etc. (or, of course, coding).

Two major new features in this release: A new database format, and a new tree view. The former should be invisible to users, the latter quite useful.

The application imports old database files transparently, and warns the user upon saving that the new format is incompatible. PLEASE SAVE YOUR DATABASE UNDER A NEW NAME. This way, the stable (1.9x) passwordsafe will still be able to access your data if something goes wrong.

Please write me if you find problems with this release. A small sample database and description of how to recreate the problem is the best way to report bugs.

Thanks to all the users and developers who've contributed code, suggestions, discussion and constructive criticism.

Release 1.92c.2 is available for download. This is a maintenance release for PocketPC (WinCE) versions of PasswordSafe, fixing the following:

This fix raises an additional known problem in that entering data into the notes field is difficult because the field is partially obscured by the SIP.

Thanks yet again to Kevin for this release!

16 September 2003

Release 1.92c.1 is available for download. This is a maintenance release for PocketPC (WinCE) versions of PasswordSafe, fixing the following:

In addition, the following new feature has been added:

Thanks to Kevin for this release.

10 September 2003

Oscar Sodani has written a simple tutorial for PasswordSafe: http://www.help2go.com/public/article139.html

9 August 2003

Release 1.92c is available for download. This is a maintenance release, fixing a few minor annoyances:

The PocketPC release incorporates the fixes of the Windows release. In addition, the endianness of devices built around the SH3 CPU is now correct.

Thanks to Gregg and Karlo for their fixes, and to Kevin for the PocketPC builds.

Windows binaries may be downloaded from here, PocketPC build from here, and sources from here.

26 July 2003

Thanks to Kevin Preece's efforts, we now have a version of PasswordSafe that runs on the PocketPC platform. From the release notes for this version: "This is the first release for the Pocket PC and supports Pocket PC 2000 (ARM, MIPS and SH3) and 2002 or later (ARM only)." This release is based on 1.92b, and is fully functional. Binaries may be downloaded from here, sources from here.

19 July 2003

Work on 2.0 continues, slowly but surely. Meanwhile, we've been favourably mentioned on Bruce Schneier's Crypto-Gram newsletter.

13 June 2003

Release 1.92b is available for download. This fixes a minor but annoying bug: [746127] After starting the application, the user has to click on an entry in order to be able to jump to an entry that starts with a typed letter. Binaries may be downloaded from here, sources from here. Thanks to Gregg for fixing this.

30 May 2003

Release 1.92-DK EXPERIMENTAL is available for download. As the name implies, this release has a new feature that we'd like to try out: Each entry can now have up to three separate passwords. We've labelled this version experimental because databases written by this version will NOT be readable by other versions. If this feature is what scratches your itch, fine - use it and be happy, just let us know about it so that we can incorporate it in future versions. Thanks to David Kelvin for working on this.

20 May 2003

Release 1.92a is available for download. This is a maintenance release, fixing an old bug regarding multilingual support, and a problem with persistence of the "Show password in display list" option. Thanks to Gregg for fixing the multilingual issue, and to Alex Fung for testing the fix on his machine.

Oh - here are the links for the executable and source.

14 May 2003

As promised, release 1.92 has been released for download. Executable here, source code here.

Since I've been told that the previous announcement was a bit brief, here are the new features in this release:

This is in addition to the new features already added in 1.91:

Also, a few bugs have been fixed, the most noticeable being:

This branch is now going into maintenance mode: No new features are scheduled before 2.0. We will try to fix urgent bugs as they are reported, following the "release early, release often" OpenSource policy.

1 May 2003

Release 1.91 has been released for download. Executable here, source code here. Some nice new features and a couple of annoying bugs fixed. For a list of the new features & bugfixes, see the Release Notes. This is a BETA release - no known major problems, just untested by anyone except the developers. I expect we'll be able to put out 1.92 non-beta around mid-May.  In the meanwhile, we're tossing around ideas for 2.0. Primary goal: long-discussed re-architecture to support porting to other platforms.

24 Apr 2003

We're making nice progress towards release 1.91, with some very nice new features. I'll publish a list Real Soon, I promise! Also, Gregg has entered all the items in the Todo list into SourceForge's Tracker as Bugs and RFEs, so the Todo list is now officially retired.

Well, it's been almost a year to the day since Jim posted his last update on this project, so I guess this is an appropriate time to take over the administration of this project, after all attempts to contact Jim have failed. I'd like to start by putting some code cleanups I've done on my private version under SF's CVS repository. Following that, a new binary release and source tarball, I guess. After that, I'll start going through the bugs & feature requests, seeing what's worth doing on a "low-hanging-fruit" basis. If anyone is interested in pitching in, please drop me a line.
